Mrs. Sumida says Goodbye after 39 years

I wanted to take this opportunity to say goodbye to all of the students, parents, and staff members who have helped to make my 36 years here at Dahl such a rewarding experience. I have truly been blessed by all of the students who have been in my classes. Through these many decades, I have had the privilege of teaching the children and even one or two grandchildren of my former students! We truly became a family. I have become a better person thanks to you.

I first came to Hillsdale, as Dahl was originally named, in l985 after having taught Kindergarten three years at Hellyer and having worked in the District Office as a file clerk during my college years. My daughters, Amy and Judy, attended Hillsdale when they were in Elementary school. Amy still keeps in contact with friends she made here. My husband Randy, was a frequent helper both in my classes and for the school. He helped to build the school garden.

I have always known that we are stronger together and have worked with parents both in my classes and in parent clubs to come together to build a strong community so that our children could thrive. And thrive they have!

Through the years, many students have come back to visit and tell me how they are doing. I have even received emails from former students. I am always heartened to know how well they have done. I would love to keep hearing how former students have thrived and wanted to let you know that I have set up an email address for that purpose as I have never been one for social media. One former student contacted another teacher on Facebook to find me. If you would like to keep in touch please use this email address [email protected]
I promise I will respond.

It is with both sadness and joy that I retire. I keep thinking that I have made a mistake and should stay until they have to put me out. But in my heart I know that it is time to move on and enjoy a new season of my life. I plan to read more, relax more, and travel more to see our beautiful country.

I will forever keep you in my heart! Carolyn Sumida
