During the 2016-2017 school year, kindergarten and first grade teachers received training in Guided Reading, and the second and third grade teachers are receiving training in the 2017-2018 school year. This is small group instruction that highlights specific skills needed by students to be successful in reading. Second and third grade teachers are receiving training in foundational reading skills to help students when decoding difficult words.
Students are tested using the DRA reading assessment and then are placed in groups according to their reading ability. In the small group they get focused instruction and extra practice working on skills they need to succeed in reading. Students are reassessed regularly to see progress and the groups are reorganized as needed.
