March Madness and Community updates

Dear Captain Jason M. Dahl Families,

This month we have a new character education theme of self-discipline. One key skill in attaining self-discipline is making a desired goal a habit. Studies say that it takes at least 21 days to make a habit. As we continue into the portion of the year in which students take the English Learner Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) later this month and start the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), I would like to encourage families to take the time to review your child’s study habits and set goals for the end of the school year.  More information about testing will come in next month’s newsletter and from your child’s teacher. I know that this year has caused our homes to also be our schools and workplaces and your support in your child’s education is much appreciated. Thank you for all that you do to help your child with schooling.

ELPAC Testing: If your child is learning English as a second language, please note that later this month, Dahl will be administering the ELPAC assessment. This is a test composed of reading, writing, listening and speaking tests. Your child’s teacher may send you more information on how ELPAC testing will be conducted.

Lexia: All Dahl students should be completing their weekly Lexia minutes. The Lexia program helps students with their foundational reading skills. This month, we are having a Lexia March Madness contest. Students who meet their weekly Lexia minutes (15 minutes for primary grade students and 20-30 minutes for upper grade students) will be entered into a raffle and winners will be announced at our Friday Panda Hour. Winners will then be able to pick up their prize from the front office.

This month is also Read Across America and we are celebrating with a Spirit Week from March 1st - 5th. The flyer will be sent via REMIND. Reading is a great family activity. If you are in need of new reading materials, Dahl has a little library in front of the school and last December, we also sent out information on how you can access digital reading books through the San Jose Public Library.

STEAM Night on March 25th at 6:00 p.m.: In addition to our Monday and Friday Panda Hour at 1:00 p.m., we will also have another great student socialization opportunity. Students are invited to participate in our STEAM night to do Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math activities involving butterflies.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Quilantang
